De puzzel van het autisme

Autisme is een ontwikkelingsstoornis die zich tijdens de eerste drie levensjaren van het kind, en soms zelfs al vanaf de geboorte, manifesteert. Er zijn veel symptomen die wisselen in intensiteit, maar belangrijke kenmerken zijn abnormaal of geen taalgebruik en communicatiestoornissen. Tot de talrijke typische symptomen behoren: onverschilligheid voor anderen, ontwijkende blik of moeilijkheden om visueel contact te leggen, niet spelen met leeftijdsgenoten, stereotiep of dwangmatig gedrag, angst voor en verzet tegen veranderingen, moeilijkheden om iets abstracts of impliciets te begrijpen of om de omgeving te ontcijferen. En dat terwijl het kind in kwestie soms over zeer gespecialiseerde vaardigheden op andere gebieden beschikt …
Hoe is het tegenwoordig met autisme gesteld? Volgens een Zuid-Koreaanse studie die in 2011 werd gepubliceerd in het American Journal of Psychiatry en door een internationaal team van Amerikaanse, Canadese en Zuid-Koreaanse onderzoekers werd uitgevoerd, heeft één op de 38 kinderen autisme. 2
