Zijn de ogen te beschermen bij glaucoom en diabetes?

Alweer een tijd geleden stond in dit tijdschrift een overzicht over de waarde van de natuurlijke stof palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) bij de behandeling van chronische pijn en ontstekingen. Sindsdien is er veel gebeurd; onder andere op het gebied van de oogheelkunde is een belangrijke ontwikkeling bereikt. Een aantal Amerikaanse en Italiaanse oogartsen hebben zich uitvoerig beziggehouden met de behandeling van beschadigingen in het netvlies bij glaucoom en bij diabetes, beide aandoeningen waarbij het gezichtsvermogen bedreigd wordt. PEA blijkt het netvlies bij deze aandoeningen te kunnen beschermen, iets waarover de laatste jaren veel publicaties beschikbaar zijn gekomen. Omdat onze ogen ons zoveel waard zijn, krijg ik steeds meer vragen over dit thema. Daarom geef ik in dit artikel een thematisch overzicht.

Glaucoom en diabetes zijn beide aandoeningen die de cellen in ons netvlies beschadigen. Door glaucoom ontstaat een verhoogde druk in het oog, waardoor de netvliescellen te weinig voeding en zuurstof krijgen. Bij diabetes zorgen de suikers in het bloed ervoor dat er netvliescellen beschadigd raken. Bovendien is sinds een paar jaar bekend dat zowel bij glaucoom als bij diabetes chronische ontstekingen ontstaan binnen het netvlies (Impellizzer, 2015). Beide aandoeningen bedreigen dus via meerdere mechanismen ons gezichtsvermogen.
